Equity markets and precious and base metals posted modest gains last week, supported by lower oil prices, and softer than expected U.S. inflation and employment data, which reduced expectations for further Fed tightening. This week, we believe investor focus will be on the minutes from the Fed’s last meeting for further clues on the Fed’s path for interest rates.
Last week, our Top Picks portfolio returned -2.3% vs. -3.1% for the benchmark (TSXV), with 13 of 22 holdings outperforming the benchmark. Our picks have outperformed the benchmark in six of seven periods tracked, with 55% of holdings up since their addition to the portfolio.
Last week, our Fair Value Model portfolio returned -0.2% vs. +0.8% for the benchmark (NYSE Equal Sector Weight/EQL). Our picks outperformed the benchmark in three of five periods tracked, reinforcing the portfolio’s ability to generate alpha over longer time frames.
