Last week, equity markets were broadly flat, while sharp declines in gold and silver weighed on mining stocks, and defensive sectors outperformed. This week, AI remains in focus as Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon report earnings, while the Fed and Bank of Canada rate decisions, U.S. Q3 GDP growth, and inflation data will shape market expectations for interest rates, and economic growth.
Last week, our Fair Value Model portfolio returned -1.0% vs. 0.2% for the benchmark (NYSE Equal Sector Weight/EQL). Despite outperforming in seven of 10 sectors, steep declines in basic materials and communication services weighed on weekly returns, while our portfolio continued to outperform the benchmark over the three and six-month periods.
Last week, our Top Picks portfolio returned -3.8% vs. -2.3% for the benchmark (TSXV). However, our picks outperformed the benchmark in five of the seven periods shown below, highlighting the consistency of our stock selection over the long term.
